Accidents are often reduced to facts and figures or cause and effect. But then, there aren’t enough words in the universe that can express the deep, twisting sadness we feel when hear of an accident during a race.

25-year-old Italian rider Andrea Antonelli died this afternoon after suffering a serious accident at Moscow Raceway during the starting lap of the FIM World Supersport race.

According to a WSBK press release, the accident took place at 1.32pm, when Antonelli riding for Team Goeleven Kawasaki crashed on the straight between turn 14 and turn 15.

The crash, followed by a collision with another rider’s machine left him with a fatal cranium base fracture. The race was stopped immediately with the red flag and Andrea was taken to an ambulance where the medical staff worked to resuscitate him.

However Andrea succumbed to his injuries at 2.10pm local time.

The WSS, SBK Race 2 and all other scheduled activities were cancelled.

My thoughts and condolences go out to Andrea’s family and friends.

RIP Andrea Antonelli. You will be missed.
